Groundworx Tabs Accordion

Tabs & Accordion 1.2.0 is a significant update focused on accessibility, search visibility, and a smarter foundation under the hood.

Accessibility

This release brings the plugin in line with WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Every interactive element now has a visible focus indicator for keyboard users. Closed panels are properly hidden from assistive technology using the inert attribute, so screen readers and keyboard navigation only reach content that’s actually visible.

The tabs block now uses the correct ARIA roles depending on how it’s displayed — when it switches to accordion layout on smaller screens, the roles update automatically. No more mismatched semantics between what users see and what screen readers announce.

For users who prefer reduced motion, all expand/collapse animations are disabled automatically.

Built-in Structured Data

New in this release: FAQ and How To schema output, built right into the block. Enable it from the Accessibility & SEO panel in the inspector, choose your type, and the plugin outputs valid JSON-LD in the page head — no extra plugins needed.

Panel labels become questions (FAQ) or step names (How To). Panel content becomes the answers or step details. If you’ve filled in the Accessible Name field, it’s included as the schema name.

Smarter Keyboard Navigation

Arrow key navigation has been completely rewritten to use the WordPress Interactivity API the way it was designed — through reactive context, not DOM queries. Each trigger manages its own focus state. When the tabs block responsively switches between tabs and accordion layout, focus automatically transfers to the matching trigger.

In accordion display mode, arrow keys now move focus without auto-activating panels, preventing the scroll jumps that occurred in previous versions.

Accessible Name

A new field in the inspector lets you give each tabs or accordion block a descriptive name — like “Product Details” or “Setup Instructions” — that screen readers announce to help users understand what the section contains.
